My other half and I really enjoyed your Xmas lectures. We just came across an example that may be in your area but is confusing the heck out of us both.
We were listening to this program a programme on BBC2 about King George (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0195qtj/King_George_and_Queen_Mary_The_Royals_Who_Rescued_the_Monarchy_Episode_1/). At 30:04 into the programme the commentator says “his idea of hell” which is what my other half heard. I heard “his idea of heaven”. We’ve just spent 10 minutes repeating the 5 seconds in question at different volumes and have now ended up hearing it the other way round (she hears heaven I hear hell). If we turn it down slightly it switches back again (I hear hell, she hears heaven).
It’s now driving us both insane.
Any explanation gratefully received.
Thanks very much for making this available. Great series. Aren’t electrons wonderful? It’s only after reading Knocking On Heaven’s Door that I began to realize how much we’ve got to learn about the composition of the universe, and ourselves. These lectures compliment Dr. Jerry Coyne’s work, trying to dispel the notion of free will. Of course the defenition may vary between groups of people.
